South Bend is home of the Hummer, but was home of the Studebaker first.
In 1852 the Studebakers opened a blacksmith shop in South Bend and continued building cars here until 1963. The Studebaker plant may be history, but the Studebaker museum continues to showcase their cars. It moved to a new location in October 2005, where it displays pristine autos from the early 20th century as well as famous vehicles including the coach President Abraham Lincoln rode to the theater on the night of his assasination and one of two 1951 Studebaker Commanders used in the 1979 Muppet Movie.
